The woman I’m falling in love with is legally blind and has a condition called Retinitis pigmentosa. I love her so much. I started listening to this audiobook, The Country of the Blind by Andrew Leland. He also has retinitis pigmentosa. There isn’t currently a cure. I know that I cannot focus my energy on “fixing” (and I’m not saying my partner needs to be fixed – though I know they would appreciate their sight stay intact).

Instead, I will try to focus on understanding. I want to understand how to support my partner, what they may be experiencing, what their fears may be, what they hate about sighted folks, what is helpful and respectful, what makes things worse. So, I’m starting with this story and will hopefully find more narratives as I continue to learn about my partners experience.
